The coordinator of the Zalingei camps in Central Darfur has suggested “government involvement” in attacks on displaced people after a camp resident was \u201cshot and seriously injured before the eyes of police\u201d.<\/p>\n
The coordinator told Radio Dabanga that on Tuesday, two gunmen riding motorcycles opened fire on Adam Haroun Adam of camp Hamidiyah as he returned from the nearby market area of Murrarin.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe gunmen entered the camp through Square 7 and left again via Square 2, after which they fled to the Teiba district near to camp Hamidiyah,\u201d the coordinator said. \u201cThis occurred before the eyes of the police, while the victim, who was transferred to hospital, has not received any medical services so far.\u201d<\/p>\n
He denounced the incident, accusing the \u201csecurity apparatus\u201d of \u201cbeing behind the insurgents, with the purpose of terrorising the displaced and eliminating their cadres\u201d.<\/p>\n
The coordinator lamented the deterioration of the security situation at the camp and called on Unamid \u201cto play its role\u201d in protecting the displaced and maintaining security.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnamid must work in conjunction with the community police and state authorities inside the camp so to put an end to such militia activities,\u201d he said. \u201cIf Unamid cannot play its role, then it should declare its failure so that the UN Security Council can put other measures in place,\u201d the coordinator concluded.<\/p>\n
