The office of the spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has confirmed that one Ethiopian peacekeeper was killed and two others injured on Friday morning as a result of the shelling of targets in Kadugli, capital of South Kordofan.<\/p>\n

The UN statement from New York says that Ban Ki-moon expressed his condolences to the family of the fallen peacekeeper and to the Government of Ethiopia, and urged \u201cthe Government of Sudan and the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Army-North (SPLA-N) to immediately suspend hostilities and resume ceasefire negotiations to end the conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile States.\u201d<\/p>\n

The President of the UN Security Council, Mark Lyall Grant, has joined with the Secretary-General in condemning the shelling: \u201cThe members of the Security Council condemn in the strongest terms the attack on the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and the Joint Border Verification and Monitoring Mechanism interim headquarters in Kadugli, which resulted in the death of an Ethiopian peacekeeper and left two others wounded,\u201d the statement says.<\/p>\n

The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for UNISFA and called on all parties \u201cto exercise maximum restraint and to cooperate fully with the mission and the Joint Border Verification and Monitoring Mechanism for the successful implementation of their mandates\u201d. They also called on the Government of Sudan to \u201cswiftly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice\u201d.<\/p>\n

As reported by Radio Dabanga on Friday, the SPLA-N confirmed via their spokesman Arnu Ngutulu Lodi that they had shelled \u201cmilitary targets\u201d in Kadugli, however, \u201cit was not our intention to bombard the headquarters of the UN forces at the airport,\u201d Lodi said.<\/p>\n
