Dozens have been killed and injured in renewed clashes that have erupted between Misseriya and Salamat tribesmen. According to multiple witnesses who spoke to Radio Dabanga, the clashes continue in spite of the current and ongoing \u2018reconciliation conference\u2019 between the tribes\u2019 Omdas in Zalingei.<\/p>\n

While sources said that the situation remained \u201ccalm\u201d in the area around Umm Dukhun, which has witnessed repeated clashes over the past weeks, on Tuesday, Shattai locality in South Darfur, and Irikom near Zalingei were scenes of violence.<\/p>\n

\u201cHundreds of Misseriya militants in three vehicles, dozens of motorcycles and riding camels and horses stormed Salamat villages at about 10:00am. In the attack, five Salamat tribesmen were killed, many others were wounded, and several houses torched,\u201d the witnesses said.<\/p>\n

In Central Darfur, clashes broke out on Tuesday morning and raged until 3:00pm between Salamat and Misseriya tribesmen in the Irikom area near the city of Zalingei. This let to hundreds of families fleeing villages in the area and heading for the nearby Hamsa Dagik and Al Hammedia camps for displaced persons.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe clashes on the outskirts of their city have led many residents and traders in Zalingei to close their doors in fear of the violence infiltrating the city itself,\u201d according to city and camp coordinators, who appealed via Radio Dabanga to Unamid to resume the security patrols that were previously suspended.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, within the city, the delegations of the Salamat and Misseriya continue to negotiate at the peace conference. A draft peace agreement has been handed to both parties for perusal, and possibly approval.<\/p>\n
