The office of the Prosecutor for Darfur crimes in El Fasher has filed charges against 18 of the defendants who allegedly participated in the attack on the \u2018peace convoy\u2019 in which Mohamed Bashar Ahmed, leader of the JEM-Bashar faction, died.<\/p>\n

Bashar\u2019s faction, a breakaway from the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), was a signatory of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD); his death attracted widespread condemnation.<\/p>\n

Reports of the exact location of the attack are still unclear, but it seems to have occurred on the Sudan-Chad border. Bashar\u2019s brother and his deputy Suleiman Arko also died in the attack.<\/p>\n

The Prosecutor for Darfur crimes, Yasser Ahmed Mohamed, told the Sudan News Agency that the charges have been brought based on a complaint filed by the relatives of the victims, including the surviving Bashar brother, Munna Bashar Ahmed and the family of Suleiman Arko.<\/p>\n

Khaled Bulla Yaqoub, who has been assigned as assistant to the Attorney General to investigate, pointed out that the current case in the case does not require the disclosure of the defendants\u2019 names. \u201cThat can only occur once reasonable evidence has been gathered against them\u201d.<\/p>\n

The JEM-Bashar faction was formed in September last year when a splinter faction of the JEM announced its separation from Darfur\u2019s largest rebel group, accusing the movement of becoming a biased organisation, expressing favouritism to some particular ideas and accused the group of being no longer transparent.<\/p>\n

On 6 April, Mohamed Bashar, leader of what became known as the JEM-Bashar, signed the internationally brokered DDPD with the Sudanese government in Qatar. On the day he died, it is claimed he was leading a \u2018peace convoy\u2019 towards Khartoum, where he was to begin implementing the terms of the Document.<\/p>\n
