Pro-government militiamen intercepted three trucks carrying displaced persons between the El Salam camp and Nyala, in South Darfur, on Tuesday evening. A man who resisted the attack was seriously injured. The El Salam-Nyala road has had a \u201cheavy presence of militiamen\u201d since last weekend.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Mahjoub Adam Tabaldiya of El Salam told Radio Dabanga that the gunmen, on horses and cars, ambushed two vehicles moving from the camp to the state capital. A third vehicle heading to El Salam from Nyala was also intercepted, he said.<\/p>\n

The sheikh stated that the passengers were \u201crobbed and insulted\u201d by the militants, who stole money, cell phones and goods the displaced were bringing to the camp. \u201cWhen Ahmed Mohamed Musa refused to hand over his cell phone to the militants, they beat him with rifle butts, seriously injuring him,\u201d Tabaldiya said.<\/p>\n

He added that another displaced man, Abdullah Abakar Mohamedo, had SDG1,000 ($227) stolen. Hawa Abdelaziz Hasaballa had her cell phone and SDG375 ($85) stolen and \u201call possessions\u201d of Aisha Ahmed Ibrahim were taken by the militiamen.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter robbing the passengers, the militants asked them about their tribes, which would mean eliminating the displaced persons on ethnical basis,\u201d he said, warning about \u201cthe serious repercussions of such acts on security and social peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that the gunmen have beset the road connecting El Salam to Nyala since last weekend. They are targeting displaced persons travelling between the two sites. On Monday, the sheikh said El Salam was \u201csurrounded\u201d by militiamen.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Tabaldiya said Unamid ran a patrol in the area \u201cto explore and secure the road, without success\u201d. As a result, he said, the displaced decided not to travel to Nyala for shopping \u201cin fear of being robbed or killed by gunmen stationed by the road\u201d.<\/p>\n

The sheikh appealed to the authorities and UNAMID forces to secure the road between Nyala and El Salam to preserve the lives and properties of the displaced persons.<\/p>\n
