A 14-year-old girl, who was abducted from a village about 17 kilometres west of Kabkabiya in North Darfur on Friday evening, is recovering in hospital after a two-day gang-rape ordeal.<\/p>\n

A member of the girl\u2019s family told Radio Dabanga that \u201cshe was abducted at gunpoint by pro-government militiamen while tending a farm near to the village with her 65-year-old grandmother\u201d.<\/p>\n

It reportedly took a group of citizens to free her from her captors, who had allegedly taken turns to rape her continuously over two days. The group who freed her managed to arrest one of the alledged perpetrators.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey handed him over to the commander of the region, Sheikh Musa Hilal demanding that he be punished,\u201d the relative said.<\/p>\n

The girl was admitted to Kabkabiya hospital in a serious condition.<\/p>\n

The displaced of the camps in Sirba locality, West Darfur, have highlighted the violence suffered by women who are married-off too young.<\/p>\n

A woman activist from Abu Suruj camp told Radio Dabanga that the parents of schoolgirls in the camps are marrying their daughters at an early age, taking them out of basic education.<\/p>\n

The activist branded this trend \u201csystematic violence against women\u201d, appealing via Radio Dabanga to the parents in the camps not to do this.<\/p>\n

She believes women must have active role in the community, and demanded the extension of women\u2019s rights to the rural areas and small communities of Darfur.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe women\u2019s rights in Darfur, especially in the rural areas, are so abused that the women do not even know their rights are being abused,\u201d she asserted.<\/p>\n

As previously reported by Radio Dabanga, in a statement on Darfur to the UN Security Council in June, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda, highlighted \u201cthe use of sexual violence as a weapon of war\u201d as one of the crimes for which \u201cimpunity must end\u201d.<\/p>\n
