The heavy rainfall in North and South Darfur states has caused injuries and displacement to dozens of people, destroying thousands of houses and sanitary facilities. According to a humanitarian agency estimates, almost 100,000 people are affected across the country.<\/p>\n

Darfur<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Tuesday, floods caused by heavy rains reportedly injured 50 children in North Darfur, destroyed 1,000 houses and a number of shops.<\/p>\n

Witnesses told Radio Dabanga 50 donkeys, several cattle and some chickens were killed, and essential food and goods destroyed.<\/p>\n

Tuesday\u2019s rain reportedly started at about 1pm, and continued unabated until 4pm. The witnesses said that the injured children were transported to the Unicef hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n

The sources noted that the camps for the displaced were hardest hit, with many families now living in the open.<\/p>\n

On Friday, downpours led to the collapse of 2,500 houses and a number of toilets in Salam camp in North Darfur. Its residents appealed to humanitarian organisations and state and local authorities in El Fasher to provide shelter, food and cover for those affected.<\/p>\n

On Sunday evening, rains in South Darfur state caused injuries among a number of displaced people at Kalma, Dreige, Attash and El Salam camps.<\/p>\n

Siddiq Mohamed Musa and El Tayeb Hassoun were injured and dozens of houses and sanitation facilities collapsed, according to the spokesman for the Association of Displaced Persons and Refugees of Darfur, Hussein Abu Sharati.<\/p>\n

He appealed via Radio Dabanga to humanitarian organisations to expedite the provision of tents and plastic sheets to those affected, especially the newly displaced.<\/p>\n

Sudan<\/strong><\/p>\n

UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has released an infographic map showing the extent of the damage and number of people affected by the recent flash floods (see below<\/em>).<\/p>\n

According to the map, the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) and the Commission for Voluntary and Humanitarian Work (CVHW) report that an estimated 98,500 people have been affected by heavy rain and flash floods in Khartoum, River Nile, Blue Nile, North Darfur, South Darfur, Northern and Red Sea states between 1 and 4 August.<\/p>\n

According to SRCS and CVHW, the flash floods have killed 11 people and destroyed or damaged more than 14,000 houses in the states affected. Khartoum and River Nile are the worst affected states. Immediate needs of the affected people include emergency shelter, health and water and sanitation services.<\/p>\n
