UPDATE 19:39 – <\/span>The United Nations Human Rights Office says that Sudan used excessive force to suppress the protests against the rising of fuel prices. The European Union did not condemn the Sudan government but is only ‘disturbed by the reported violence with rising numbers of civilian casualties and arrests as well as the material damage caused’.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights called for restraint after people have been killed across Sudan amid protests against the Government\u2019s decision to suspend fuel subsidies. \u201cWe are deeply concerned about reports that a significant number of people have been killed during the demonstrations taking place across Sudan since Monday,\u201d C\u00e9cile Pouilly, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, told reporters in Geneva.<\/p>\n

Pouilly described how in Khartoum violent clashes erupted between demonstrators and police forces, resulting in an unknown number of casualties. \u201cSecurity forces are reported to have used excessive force in suppressing the protests, with security agents allegedly firing live ammunition at some protesters and beating others,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWitnesses speak of bodies of dead demonstrators with gunshot wounds in the upper torso and head. There have also been reports of destruction of property by demonstrators.\u201d She reminded the authorities that under international law, intentional lethal use of firearms can only be justified when strictly unavoidable and only in order to protect life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe therefore call on law enforcement officials to show utmost restraint and make sure that they comply at all times with international human rights obligations and international standards on policing,\u201d said Pouilly. \u201cWe call on all parties to refrain from resorting to violence and on protesters to maintain the peaceful nature of their demonstrations,\u201d she added. \u201cWe also urge the authorities to respect the civil liberties of those protesting and, in particular, their right to assemble peacefully and express their views.”<\/p>\n

The European Union calls on all actors to avoid further violence. \u201cWe particularly appeal to the Government of Sudan to respect the Sudanese peoples’ right to freedom of expression, freedom of the media and freedom of peaceful assembly.\u201d<\/p>\n
