Demonstrations took place on Tuesday against the price hikes and high cost of living in a number of camps for the displaced in Central Darfur.<\/p>\n
Peaceful protests were staged in Zalingei camps for displaced, including Hamidiya, Khamsa Dagayig, Teeba, Hasaheesa, and El Salam. The camps of Garsila and Nierteti witnessed similar demonstrations.<\/p>\n
The demonstrators demanded the downfall of the regime and chanted slogans like \u201cThe people want to overthrow the regime\u201d, \u201cThe people are hungry, you dancer\u201d, \u201cLeave, leave, you murderer\u201d, and \u201cRevolt, revolt until we overcome\u201d.<\/p>\n
The coordinator of the Zalingei camps reported to Radio Dabanga that the demonstrations were \u201cpeaceful and civilised. They expressed the displaced people’s rejection of the price hikes, the regime of Al Bashir and the National Congress Party.\u201d<\/p>\n
He expects that rallies will continue developing until Friday, and noted that according to the Constitution, people have the right to stage peaceful protests.<\/p>\n
The coordinator stresed that police and security forces should not use violence against the demonstrators as they are also “victims of the regime\u201d.<\/p>\n
The Spokesman for the National Congress Party of Central Darfur state, Mohamed Abakir Hassan Hamadein, admitted that demonstrations were taking place in \u201csome camps for the displaced in Central Darfur\u201d. They were staged by those he called \u201csupporters of the Sudan Revolutionary Front\u201d rebel coalition.<\/p>\n
Hamadein added that since the lifting of fuel subsidies demonstrations have been expected. \u201cThe people of Central Darfur were patient for some time before starting their protests.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Spokesman confirmed that the right to demonstrate is entrenched in the Constitution as long as the demonstrations remain peaceful and the demonstrators do not turn to vandalism, \u201cas happened for example in Khartoum”.<\/p>\n
He added that the authorities of Central Darfur state are fully prepared for any situation and security measures have been enforced in the entire region.<\/p>\n
