Unamid Joint Special Representative (JSR) Mohamed ibn Chambas visited the Mission’s regional headquarters in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, on October 15, following the ambush of a Unamid unit on October 13 which led to the death of three peacekeepers from Senegal. One other peacekeeper from Senegal was injured.<\/p>\n

The attack came just two days after a Zambian peacekeeper was stabbed to death in a neighbouring region of Darfur and brings the number of Unamid peacekeepers killed this year to 13.<\/p>\n

During the commemoration ceremony, the JSR commended the bravery of Mission personnel who died while trying to bring peace to Darfur. <\/p>\n

“We are here to remember these brave peacekeepers who made the ultimate sacrifice while helping the vulnerable people of Darfur. Their sad loss is painful to all of us, but we are here to remember them on this holy day, the first day of Eid el Adha,” the JSR said. <\/p>\n

“I am also carrying to you a personal message from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon and his Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Herv\u00e9 Ladsous. They both asked me to convey their deepest sympathies and encourage you to continue to resolutely discharge the noble duty you came to perform of protecting the vulnerable populations and working for peace in Darfur,” he added. <\/p>\n

The US Department of State, in its press statement of October 15, strongly condemned these unlawful acts and called on the Sudanese government to investigate \u201cthese malicious attacks\u201d and hold the perpetrators to account.<\/p>\n

The statement also expresses the USA\u2019s grave concern \u201cabout the deteriorating security, human rights, and humanitarian situation in Darfur, which has resulted in the forcible displacement of over 300,000 persons this year; this is more than the total number of newly displaced persons in Darfur over the past two years combined. We call on the Sudanese Government and all rebel groups to engage without preconditions in an effective and inclusive political process to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n
