The National Consensus Forces (NCF, a coalition of opposition parties) called for a mass celebration on Monday on the occasion of the anniversary of the 1964 \u201cOctober Revolution\u201d that toppled the military government of the late President Ibrahim Abboud.<\/p>\n

The Spokesperson for the NCF, Kamal Omar, told Radio Dabanga that the celebration will be held in a very complex and unstable time. \u201cThe country is suffering under a despotic and tyrannical regime that rules by killing, torturing and displacing citizens, and by oppressing and arresting peaceful demonstrators.\u201d<\/p>\n

Omar stressed that the NCF does not believe in the possibility of a solution within the current system, explaining that the coalition is currently stepping up its actions to topple the regime.<\/p>\n

The spokesman also reported that the NCF has agreed with the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF, a coalition of armed movements and opposition parties) on a comprehensive political programme, focussing on a draft text of an interim constitution.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis interim constitution is intended to serve during the coming transition period after the overthrow of the current regime. We want to reassure the people that the unavoidable change will be in their interest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Omar said that they have received a draft \u201cpolitical declaration\u201d from the SRF, confirming that all political forces agree on the text, intended to unite the stances of the various opposition groups.<\/p>\n

The leader of the National Umma Party (NUP), el Sadiq el Mahdi announced that the NUP\u2019s attempt to create a dialogue with the ruling National Congress Party failed. The purpose of the dialogue was to find a \u201cthird solution\u201d for the country\u2019s present crisis. El Mahdi now called his followers to stage protests and search for a suitable alternative to the current government.<\/p>\n

El Mahdi commented that Sudan never witnessed \u201csuch a ravaged economy, caused by excessive spending on security to keep the ruling party in power\u201d and called for collective action to overcome the crisis.<\/p>\n
