Extensive fires in Mershing locality in South Darfur, have reportedly destroyed hundreds of acres of farmlands. A farmer said that the fire was ignited by heavy gunfire.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Radio Dabanga a farmer reported that fire in the areas of Teiga, Kola, and Silo have destroyed entire millet, beans, and sesame crops and large tracts of grassland and forests.<\/p>\n

He said problems started when a government force made up of policemen and troops of the Central Reserve Forces (Abu Tira) were pursuing militiamen accused of killing a policeman from Elgardud district.<\/p>\n

They clashed at Teiga, west of Mershing, and the fire started as a result of the “heavy weapons used by the two parties”, the source explained. <\/p>\n
