The head of Unamid, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, met with Chadian President Idriss D\u00e9by in N’Djamena on 25 November.<\/p>\n

Ibn Chambas briefed the President on the deteriorating security situation in Darfur and the attack on Unamid on 24 November in which one Rwandese peacekeeper was killed by unknown gunmen in North Darfur.<\/p>\n

He reiterated the need for durable peace to end this seemingly intractable conflict and shared his plans to engage the non-signatory rebel movements in a technical workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in December, seeking the support of President D\u00e9by in bringing on board the peace process the non-signatory movements.<\/p>\n

President D\u00e9by acknowledged that peace in Darfur is essential for the regional security since the conflict has had grave socio-economic consequences for Chad. He deplored the worsening security situation in Darfur, which is stopping the refugees in Chad from returning to their country and displaced Darfuri\u2019s from returning to their communities.<\/p>\n

He informed Ibn Chambas that it is necessary to involve the international community more in the peace process and steer the non-signatory rebel movements towards dialogue and negotiations. The President commended the efforts of Unamid and assured Ibn Chambas of Chad\u2019s support and cooperation to the mediation. <\/p>\n

The head of Unamid has recently visited South Sudan as part of a tour of Sudan\u2019s neighbours with a view to underscore the importance of inter-regional cooperation to resolve the Darfur conflict, not only for its people, but also for the peace and stability of the entire region.<\/p>\n
