A Rwandan peacekeeper has died after a Unamid convoy came under attack by unknown gunmen on Sunday in North Darfur. The peacekeeper, who was shot during the attack, died of his wounds in the Mission\u2019s hospital in Kabkabiya.<\/p>\n

The death of the Rwandan soldier has now raised the number of peacekeepers the Mission has lost in 2013 to 14. The latest attack happened at the Kabkabiya-Saraf Omra road, a Unamid statement confirms. It also says that one of its vehicles was hijacked by the attackers.<\/p>\n

“This was clearly a crime against humanity by desperate individuals,\u201d Unamid Joint Special Representative Mohamed Ibn Chambas said. \u201cI once more call on the Government of Sudan to act decisively and quickly in bringing the perpetrators to justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chambas extends his \u201cheartfelt condolences to the family of the fallen peacekeeper, the Rwandan contingent and the Government of Rwanda, which, he states, has contributed immensely to Unamid\u2019s operations.\u201d<\/p>\n

‘Deeply disturbed’<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a statement, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced he is \u201cdeeply disturbed to learn of another attack \u2026 by unidentified armed assailants on a Unamid convoy”.<\/p>\n

He expresses his sincere condolences to the family of the fallen peacekeeper, and to the Government of the Republic of Rwanda.<\/p>\n

The Secretary General condemns in the strongest terms this attack on Unamid and expects the Government of Sudan to take swift action to bring the perpetrators of this and previous attacks on the Mission to justice.<\/p>\n
