On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on Monday, women in the camps for the displaced in Darfur called the attention of \u201cthe world and its international organisations working in the field of women and human rights to what is happening in Darfur, in particular the militiamens’ manifold abuses of displaced women\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Radio Dabanga, the spokesperson for the women in the Abu Suruj camp for the displaced, West Darfur, called for the need to halt all forms of violence against women and to eliminate the reasons behind them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s special day for the elimination of violence against women comes at a time when the women in Darfur continue to face all forms of violence. Physical violence and rape are threatening their lives and taking away their rights. Last October nine women in the camp miscarried due to the harsh work of carrying heavy loads of sorghum on their heads for long distances.<\/p>\n

The spokesperson demanded that \u201call competent authorities lift the oppression of women, as women are mothers, nannies, and schools\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wars in Sudan the cause of the violence women are facing. Therefore we hope that a comprehensive peace will soon be reached so that all women in Sudan, and Darfur in particular, will be able to live a happy, safe, and dignified life\u201d.<\/p>\n
