Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) has announced a widely expected cabinet reshuffle. The presidential affairs minister, Lt. Col. Bakri Hassan Saleh will be appointed as Sudan\u2019s new first vice-president, instead of Ali Osman Mohamed Taha.<\/p>\n

According to senior party official Rabee Abdelati Ebeid, the second second vice-president will be Hassabo Mohammed Abdelrahman, taking over the position of El Haj Adam Yusef.<\/p>\n

Al Bashir had announced on Saturday that first vice-president Ali Osman Taha, one of the key figure behind the 1989 military coup, had resigned \u201cto pave the way for a new government\u201d.<\/p>\n

Minister of Defence, Abdelrahim Mohamed Hussein, minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Karti, and minister of Minerals, Kamal Abdellatif kept their positions in the new cabinet.<\/p>\n

NCP Secretary of external relations and Deputy Chairman, Dr Ibrahim Ghandour, will take over Nafie Ali Nafie\u2019s posts of Presidential Advisor and NCP\u2019s vice-chairman.<\/p>\n

The Sudanese Central Bank\u2019s deputy governor, Badreldin Mahmoud, will replace Ali Mahmoud Abdelrasul as minister of Finance, and the head of Sudan\u2019s Railways, Makawi Awad, veteran oil minister Awad El Jaz.<\/p>\n

Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid, formerly minister of Interior Affairs, will become minister of Agriculture. His position will be taken by the current minister of Industry, Abdelwahid Yousef.<\/p>\n

A faction of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and some smaller parties will probably join the new cabinet.<\/p>\n

The reshuffle had been expected for some time, after divisions within the NCP emerged to the surface.<\/p>\n

In September more than 30 NCP reformists, led by Ghazi Salaheldin El Atabani, former Advisor to the President, presented a memorandum to the Sudanese President, in which they questioned the removal of subsidies on fuel and other basic commodities (on 23 September) and called for political and economic reforms.<\/p>\n

All signatories of the memorandum were stripped of their positions. The dissidents recently announced the formation of a new political party.<\/p>\n
