The Darfur rebel movements that attended a technical workshop on the conditions of peace negotiations, from 9 to 11 December in Addis Ababa, stressed in a joint press release their full commitment to a \u201ccomprehensive, inclusive, just and sustainable peaceful settlement of the Sudanese conflicts\u201d.<\/p>\n

Unamid, in cooperation with the East African Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), had invited all non-signatory Darfur rebel movements to participate in the workshop, in order to discuss the possibility \u201cto catch-up with the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur\u201d. Of the main Darfuri rebel groups, the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Minni Menawi (SLM-MM) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) participated in the workshop.<\/p>\n

According to the joint SLM-JEM press statement the two movements keep to their standpoint that \u201cpartial peace agreements are doomed and proved to prolong the plight of the affected populations and opens the door for further disintegration of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both rebel movements agree on the need of \u201ca conducive environment for peace talks through confidence building measures\u201d, considering the release of political prisoners and detainees and exchange of prisoners of war as signs of goodwill.<\/p>\n

As for the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the conflict areas, both rebel groups demand \u201cthe expelled INGOs to return to Sudan\u201d, as well as a stop to the aerial bombardments, \u201cthe main cause of destabilisation and mounting civilian casualties\u201d, calling for the enforcement of a no-fly zone in accordance to UN Security Council resolutions 1593 and 2046.<\/p>\n
