The Governor of North Kordofan, Ahmed Haroun has admitted that the Janjaweed<\/em> militias have committed a series of crimes against the citizens of El Obeid and the villages surrounding the city. The crime wave has prompted a chorus of outrage from across the political spectrum.<\/p>\n

Haroun described these incidents as shocking. He apologised in a statement to the citizens of the state about the incidents of killing, rape and looting. He added that the forces accused of the killings, called ‘rapid support troops’, are large numbers of regular forces belonging to "national intelligence" who have recently been recruited for national missions.<\/p>\n

The Governor said that this militia arrived from South Kordofan to the Hashaba area on 9 January. The government sent two delegations to resolve their problems; first headed by Assistant Director General of the National Intelligence and Security Service, and the second headed by the Deputy Director-General.<\/p>\n

A source in El Obeid told Radio Dabanga that about 350 out of 1,060 vehicles carrying a number of Janjaweed<\/em> militiamen have left the city so far. A number of citizens have expressed concern the Janjaweed<\/em> might be supported by money which was collected by the authorities through the imposition of fees on citizens and the deduction of employees' salaries.<\/p>\n

The Communist Party has called for an immediate halt to hostilities on all fronts, expulsion of the Janjaweed<\/em> militias, the arrest of any who committed crimes against citizens, and compensation for all who suffered property damage.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Sunday, the Party laid the responsibility for the atrocities and abuses at the door of the authority that brought the militiamen to the state. They demanded that authorities to apologize to the citizens.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, the opposition Popular Congress Party in North Kordofan demanded in a statement the authorities’ commitment to immediately expel the Janjaweed<\/em> from the state, pay blood money for the martyrs, and treat the wounded.<\/p>\n
