The residents of Hamidiya camp for the displaced in Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur, on Friday commemorated the people who were killed and injured by security forces during a demonstration on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

Large numbers of people from the Zalingei camps for the displaced, as well as delegations from various camps in Darfur participated in the commemoration service at the Hamidiya camp. Sheikh Matar Younis told Radio Dabanga that the ceremony coincided with the last day of \u201coffering condolences to the families of the martyrs\u201d, Mohamed Ibrahim Karkab and Muhamed Ali Yagoub, who were shot dead during the demonstration.<\/p>\n

\u201cDelegations from North, West, East, and South Darfur camps for the displaced arrived, along with many community leaders and notables from Zalingei and Nertiti. They offered their condolences to the martyrs relatives, and wished the injured a quick healing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheikh Younis reported that in the speeches during the ceremony, the ruling National Congress Party, the head of the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA), Dr Tijani Sese, and the Governor of Central Darfur State, Dr Yusif Tibin, were held responsible for the shooting on the peaceful protesters. \u201cThe people present affirmed that they will continue their protest marches and peaceful demonstrations in all Darfur states until the regime is toppled.\u201d The speakers also demanded from the head of Unamid, Dr Mohamed ibn Chambas, to resign, and from the UN Security Council to change the Unamid\u2019s mandate from peacekeeping to peace enforcement.<\/p>\n

The head of the Kalma camp for the displaced in South Darfur, sheikh Ali Abdel Rahman El Tahir, strongly condemned what he called \u201cMonday\u2019s massacre\u201d at the Hamidiya camp in Zalingei. He described it as \u201csad and unacceptable\u201d, and criticised DRA head, Dr Tijani Sese. \u201cSese does not deserve to be in charge of the DRA, and representative of the people of Darfur.\u201d El Tahir condemned \u201cany violation or abuse, whether from the government or the DRA\u201d.<\/p>\n

Radio Dabanga reported on Monday that two men were killed and 24 others injured when security forces fired live bullets at a demonstration in Zalingei. The displaced went to the streets on Monday morning to protest against the Social Peace Conference in Central Darfur\u2019s capital, organised by the DRA. They not only protested against the \u201cgovernment-backed militias attending the conference and speaking on their behalf as leaders of the displaced\u201d, but also against the security forces\u2019 assault of Koran scholar and activist, sheikh Matar Younis, and the abduction of El Hamidia camp residents Yagoub Abdallah and Younis Ibrahim by militiamen on Sunday.<\/p>\n
