A representative of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) last Tuesday visited the Gaga refugee camp in Abeche, eastern Chad, to inspect the educational conditions in the camp.<\/p>\n

A resident of the Gaga refugee camp reported to Radio Dabanga that the UNHCR representative met with Abdel Rahim Khamis, the principal of a Gaga camp basic school, and discussed with him the problems the school is facing. Khamis told the representative that the monthly allowances for the teachers, as an alternative for salaries, are too low to survive. Also, the school is short of classrooms, as its 992 pupils are housed in 12 classrooms.<\/p>\n

The UNHCR representative acknowledged the school\u2019s problems and promised to find solutions to some of them. He did not make an appointment to visit the Gaga camp\u2019s Education Council, or the headmasters of the other six basic schools in the camp. The representative had already visited the other eastern Chad refugee camps of Farchana, Treguine, and Bredjing.<\/p>\n
