A ministerial delegation chaired by the federal Minister of Health arrived in El Fasher, North Darfur, on Wednesday, to assess the humanitarian needs of those affected by attacks on the eastern North Darfur localities of Alliet, El Taweisha, Kalamindo, and Saraf Omra in the west.<\/p>\n

The federal Minister of Urban Planning, Fateh Abdel Aziz, told the press upon arrival in El Fasher that the most important task for the ministry is to repair and maintain the water facilities in the eastern North Darfur localities. \u201cApart from the fact that the insurgents have destroyed all the water stations, there is almost no fuel anymore in the region. We urgently need to provide water pumps, generators, and tankers to transport water to the citizens. We need to provide fuel and financial support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abu Abbas Abdallah Tayeb Jido, the federal Minister of Health, described the health conditions in the affected localities of Saraf Omra, Alliet, El Taweisha, and Kalamindo, as \u201cvery serious\u201d. \u201cAll health facilities were destroyed, and medical equipment and medicines looted. Health workers were displaced. Some of them were killed and wounded.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that the rate of mortality among mothers, children, and elderly may have risen \u201cbecause of the lack of health services, and malnutrition. Cases of depression and hysteria may prevail as a result of intimidation and the loss of family members. Another problem is the absence of national or international organisations that could provide health services.\u201d<\/p>\n

Concerning the provision of food, the Minister of Agriculture, Eisa Mohamed Abdallah, warned that the farmlands in the four affected localities are deserted. He pointed out that this may have \u201cvery serious consequences\u201d as North Darfur was already suffering from a \u201cfood deficit of more than 60 percent, which is equivalent to 142,000 tons\u201d.<\/p>\n
