The Darfur Bar Association (DBA) expressed its concerns about the intensified campaign by the Sudanese security service against Darfuri activists. More than 15 students and human rights activists have been arrested since security forces shot at peaceful protesters at the University of Khartoum on 11 March. One of the students was killed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe human rights violations and the crackdown of Darfuri activists, university students, and DBA members who provide legal aid to students detained by security forces, have been intensified,\u201d the DBA said in a statement released on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn Tuesday, 18 March, a heavily armed security force arrested a number of Darfuri students and DBA members at the Soug El Arabi in central Khartoum. Ahmed Ali Ahmed Osman, a third-year law student at the Nilein University, Ibrahim Saleh Ibrahim (known as Guevara), a human rights activist and a graduate from the University of Sudan, and DBA members El Radi Ali Ibrahim and Abdel Rahman Yahya Dahya, were detained.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe National Congress Party\u2019s security apparatus has intensified its campaign of persecuting and arresting Darfur students and DBA members, simply because they are demanding an investigation into the facts that led to the killing of Darfuri student Ali Abakar Musa Idris during a peaceful protest at the University of Khartoum on 11 March. This widespread campaign against Darfuri students and human rights activists demanding the arrest of the murderers, is unjustified. It aims at weakening and gagging of those calling for justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

The DBA points in its statement to the detention of more than 15 students and human rights activists, and demands their immediate release. It calls upon Sudanese civil society organisations and human rights activists to launch a massive campaign in solidarity with the detained Darfuris, and urges \u201cthe political forces to insist on the release of all the detained Darfuris, as a condition to be set for a national dialogue with the regime that has students\u2019 blood on its hands\u201d.<\/p>\n
