The movements of Justice and Equality (JEM) and the Sudan Liberation led by Minni Minawi (SLM-MM) have rejected the Second Um Jaras Forum <\/span>for Peace, Security and Peaceful Co-Existence in Darfur which opened on Wednesday in Chad.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Chadian President Idris Deby and Sudan’s Vice-President Hassabo Mohamed Abdel Rahman attended the opening in eastern Chad. President Deby said that Chad has no agenda in Darfur and called on the movements to join the peace process. The two movements described the conference, which concludes on Sunday, and will be addressed by President Omar Al Bashir on Saturday, as \u201ca show\u201d.<\/p>\n

Jibril Adam Bilal, the spokesman for the JEM, in an interview with Radio Dabanga refused to attend the conference. \u201cThe Chadian government and the Sudanese President are required to play a bigger role in relation to the rights of the people of Darfur as whole, rather than standing by the side of a particular group.\u201d He stressed that his movement is not committed to any outputs that result from the conference.<\/p>\n

‘Consolidation of tribes’<\/strong><\/p>\n

The SLM-MM leadership has reiterated its rejection of the conference. \u201cIt is an extension of the attempts to dismantle the issue of Darfur, which began by the expulsion of humanitarian organisations, setting difficulties to the remaining ones, and emptying the camps\u201d, Abdallah Mursal, the spokesman for the movement, told Radio Dabanga.<\/p>\n

He explained that they see the conference as a convergence of interests between Sudan and Chad for the consolidation of tribalism in both countries. The spokesman further described the meeting between Al Bashir and Deby on Sunday as \u201can announcement of the next war, similar to that one announced by the two Presidents in El Fasher in 2003\u201d.<\/p>\n

During the opening session, Deby explained that the forum was established with the aim to find effective solutions to the problem of Darfur, to build consensus in convincing the rebel movements to join the peace process, and to promote peaceful coexistence between the various tribes in Darfur, and the Sudanese-Chadian border tribes. \u201cMore than 56 tribes are currently participating in the activities of the Um Jaras Forum.\u201d<\/p>\n
