Residents of the Gireida camps for the displaced in South Darfur staged a demonstration on Monday in protest against the growing insecurity and the deterioration of the health situation in the camps. On the same day, the Sudanese Humanitarian Aid Commission confiscated the property of the British-based international health organisation Merlin in Gireida locality.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout 10,000 displaced representing 12 camps went to the streets in a mass rally on Monday to protest against the growing insecurity and the deteriorating health situation in the camps,\u201d an activist from one of the camps reported to Radio Dabanga.<\/p>\n

The protesters delivered a memorandum to Unamid containing three demands:  Unamid should provide security and protection for the displaced, support organisations working in the field of health, and launch an investigation into a number of events in Darfur during former Unamid heads, Adolph Adada and Ibrahim Gambari, as well as during the period in which Mohamed Ibn Chambas has been heading the mission until now.  <\/p>\n

Merlin <\/strong><\/p>\n

After South Darfur State authorities had terminated the health care work of Merlin international in Gireida locality, HAC employees on Monday confiscated the INGO\u2019s property in the locality, and transported it to Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, multiple sources told Radio Dabanga.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe confiscated items included ten new mini vans, twelve generators, more than 20 computers and other equipments.\u201d<\/p>\n

Merlin, recently expelled from West Darfur, was running eight health centres in Gireida locality, four of which were clinics, two nutrition centres, and two of the centres concentrated on reproductive health.<\/p>\n

The sources added that HAC South Darfur refused a request by the hospital director of Gireida to grant the hospital the ten mini vans in order to serve the patients, as it also rejected a request by the Health Office of Gireida for two of the vehicles to be used by health workers in the locality.<\/p>\n
