Imam Sadig El Mahdi, president of the National Umma Party, described the situation in Darfur as \u201cdangerous\u201d on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

In a press conference on Wednesday, El Mahdi said that the current high level of insecurity in Darfur can only be compared with situation in 2003-2004, the first years of the war.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current violence in Darfur, especially at the hands of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commanded by the security apparatus, has led to the burning of a large number of villages, the looting of property, abductions, and the rape of many women and girls.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBesides, non-Sudanese militia elements are becoming more and more involved in Sudan.\u201d<\/p>\n

El Mahdi warned that the widespread attacks will lead to violent repercussions, \u201cas in the past\u201d. He demanded an urgent investigation into the RSF attacks, and compensation for the victims. \u201cThe international community should intervene so that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a press statement on Tuesday, the presidential Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) Follow-up Office, denied that the Sudanese government has agreed \u201cwith any party\u201d on establishing a new Darfur negotiations platform in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. The Office confirmed the government\u2019s adherence to the DDPD, \u201cbeing the sole and final platform to complete the peace process in Darfur\u201d.<\/p>\n

The main Sudanese armed movements, united in the Sudan Revolutionary Front, stick to their conviction that the many crises in Sudan cannot be solved by partial peace agreements. The rebels instead propose a holistic approach, calling for a \u201ccomprehensive peace agreement\u201d that covers all war-torn regions in the country. The last round of peace negotiations between the Sudanese government and the rebel Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Movement-North, brokered by the African Union in Addis Ababa, was suspended again, with both sides sticking to their considerably divergent positions.<\/p>\n
