More than 4,000 newly displaced of El Salam camp in Bielel locality, South Darfur, staged a demonstration against the Sudanese Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) in Nyala today.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey protested against what they called ‘the manipulation and procrastination of their registration by HAC. Only after their details have been officially recorded, the displaced are entitled to receive food rations,\u201d Sheikh Mahjoub Adam Tabaldiya of El Salam camp explained to Radio Dabanga. \u201cThey are waiting now for about two months.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe newly displaced, totalling 6,117, have officially registered their names four times in a row within two months. First the registration process was done by a committee consisting of HAC, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The second time, the details of the new displaced were registered by HAC and the camp elders, the third time by a HAC team headed by the Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, and the fourth registration was done by a South Darfur State HAC committee. This State committee told the camp sheikhs that they could not accept all the names, and that it would handle half of the registered people.<\/p>\n

As a result of the procrastination, the new displaced decided to march to the site of HAC west of the camp on Wednesday. They went, chanting slogans such as \u201cWe want tarpaulins, we want shelters, we don\u2019t want HAC, we want food.\u201d<\/p>\n

They urged UN and the international community to intervene and to \u201cfind the truth\u201d, and to provide food \u201cas soon as possible\u201d.<\/p>\n

The majority of the newly displaced arrived at El Salam camp early March, after their villages in the area southeast of Nyala had been destroyed by paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in widespread attacks on 27 and 28 February.<\/p>\n
