According to the SPLM-N, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) consists of 29,000 militiamen, of which more than 6,000 are foreigners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sudanese regime\u2019s detention of the leader of the National Umma Party (NUP) sent the wrong message, and at the same time fired a bullet at its so-called National Dialogue,\u201d Yasir Arman, the secretary-general of SPLM-N told Radio Dabanga in an interview on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe detention should prompt the Umma Party and all the opposition forces to unite in order to topple this regime of terrorists. They are treating political parties and their leaders in the same way the <em>Janjaweed <\/em>militias treat innocent citizens,\u201d the SPLM-N secretary-general said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Militias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Regarding the RSF, a militia force formed by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) in the second half of last year with the aim of eliminating the insurgency in Darfur, South Kordofan and the Blue Nile, Arman stated that they are \u201cmercenaries and war criminals who have nothing to do with the Sudanese society and its values\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Al Bashir, his defence minister, Abdel Rahim Hussein, and NISS director, Mohamed Atta, have recruited and trained more than 29,000 <em>Janjaweed<\/em>. About 4,600 of them are Chadian rebels, more than 2,000 troops come from Mali, and the rest are militiamen recruited by Brig. Mohamed Hamdan Hemeti, mostly from Arab tribes, in Darfur and Kordofan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Army<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Arman called the deployment of three RSF brigades around Khartoum a \u201cstrong evidence of using this militia as a substitute for the Sudanese army\u201d. \u201cThis confirms that the regime is terrified, and does not trust the Sudan Armed Forces, which have been stripped of their responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called upon the Sudanese army to stand up against the deployment of the RSF, \u201cbefore it&#8217;s too late, because these militia elements will destroy the fabric of Sudan\u201d.
