Some 38,000 people, both internally displaced people and new arrivals from South Sudan, need relief assistance in West Kordofan. A further 10,000 people in West Kordofan recently received food assistance from the World Food <\/span>Program<\/span>me<\/span> (WFP) and the <\/span>Sudanese Red Crescent Society <\/span><\/span>(<\/span>SRCS<\/span><\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

A joint assessment mission of the Sudanese Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) and several of the UN’s and international NGOs’ staff on 13 May found that these 38,000 displaced in West Kordofan have to be prioritised for immediate assistance. The commission has reported that a total of 2,922 affected South Sudanese households (consisting of 14,746 individuals) have taken refuge in Meiram, Debab, and Muglad towns in West Kordofan.<\/p>\n

Another 23,085 internally displaced people are living in Um Deibun, El Tibun, and El Salam (east of El Fula). All these people have not yet been verified by the HAC, the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated in its latest weekly bulletin.<\/p>\n

Food aid to West Kordofan<\/strong><\/p>\n

The WFP and the SRCS have verified and provided food assistance to 5,338 displaced individuals in \u201cBalela\u201d and \u201cEl Fardous\u201d in Babanusa locality. In \u201cEl Tiwesha\u201d and \u201cEl Liayet Gar EL Nabi\u201d in Ghubaysh locality, the organisations have provided food to 5,188 people, during a mission with the UN Department of Safety and Security from 7 to 12 May.<\/p>\n

According to OCHA, \u201csome of the displaced people in West Kordofan fled recent fighting between the Hamar and Ma\u2019aliya tribes in North and East Darfur in March and April, with other displaced people fled recent armed inter-Misseriya clan fighting within West Kordofan\u201d. Sudan\u2019s HAC said that the majority of people displaced in West Kordofan are women, children, and people with special needs.<\/p>\n

These assessments are the first to be undertaken in West Kordofan since fighting broke out in South Kordofan in June 2011, OCHA stated.<\/p>\n
