The Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) has announced the opening of five model villages in Darfur, at a total cost of $30 million, which is provided by Qatar. The inauguration will start this Sunday with the Arara village, in Beida locality, West Darfur, in the presence of First Vice-President Lt. Col. Bakri Hassan Saleh.<\/p>\n

The spokesman for the DRA said in a press conference held in Khartoum that the villages outside the development matrix amount to 1,071 projects, as they will be opened in each state of Darfur separately. <\/span>The ‘model services complex’ is part of the project ‘model villages for voluntary return’, agreed on in the 2011 Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).<\/p>\n

The villages which will be inaugurated with funding from Qatar include Arara, Ronga Tas in Central Darfur, Bulbul Timbisko in South Darfur, Um Dai in East Darfur, and Tabit in North Darfur.<\/p>\n

Displaced reject model villages<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 28 May, Ronga Tas camp for internally displaced people was attacked by a group of armed men, allegedly members of the former rebel Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM). <\/span>Both LJM and DRA have strongly denied any involvement in the attack. Sheikh Adam Hussein told Radio Dabanga that the attack came because the displaced and camp administrators had rejected \u201cmodel villages\u201d as suggested by the DDPD during a workshop.<\/p>\n

The DRA is the lead actor for the implementation of the DDPD, which was signed in May 2011 by the Sudanese government and the LJM, and later, by the Bashar faction of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM-Bashar).<\/p>\n
