Seven residents of the Gireida camp for the displaced in South Darfur were wounded in ambushes on Thursday. Prices of food are soaring in Gireida locality, while the World Food Programme (WFP) has reduced the food rations for the displaced.<\/p>\n

\u201cA group of government-backed militiamen in a number of vehicles opened fire on a commercial vehicle in the area of Um El Khairat, east of Gireida town on Thursday. The passengers were returning to the camp after having offered condolences at a funeral in Isheirat\u201d, a Gireida camp resident told Radio Dabanga.<\/p>\n

\u201cMohamed Adam, Adam Mohamed El Tom Abdel Banat, Adam Ali, Maryam Abdel Karim, and Maryam Idris sustained serious injuries. They were transferred to a hospital in Gireida. All passengers were robbed of their money, mobile telephones, and luggage.\u201d<\/p>\n

The militiamen ambushed another vehicle in the same area, the source added. \u201cIt was on its way from Omdurman to Gireida. Gireida camp resident Ashab El Sharif was shot. The driver of the vehicle managed to continue, and the passengers escaped a robbery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Food rations<\/strong><\/p>\n

The witness also reported that prices of consumer goods are soaring in Gireida locality, \u201cwhile food rations provided by the WFP to the camps for the displaced in the locality have been reduced\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe price of a pound of sugar has risen to SDG4 ($0.70), a pound of dry okra to SDG30 ($5.25), a bottle of cooking oil now costs between SDG20 and SDG25 ($4.40), a malwa<\/em> (3,145kg) of ground millet SDG33 ($5.75), and a kilo of meat SDG50 ($8.70).\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed out that the price rise coincided with the WFP\u2019s decision to strip sugar, lentils, beans, and oil from the food rations, and reduce the amount of sorghum. \u201cOne person now receives one malwa<\/em> and a half of sorghum a month.\u201d The camp resident appealed to relief organisations to accelerate the provision of food for the displaced, \u201calso non-food items such as plastic sheets and tins\u201d.<\/p>\n
