Security forces in Omdurman beat students and used tear gas to disperse them during their peaceful protest against the tribal conflict in East Darfur, staged in front of the National Assembly on Thursday. Five of the students were arrested.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe security used excessive violence to disperse the demonstration,\u201d the head of the Sibdo Students Association at the Sudanese universities and higher education institutes told Radio Dabanga. During the protest, the students condemned and rejected the clashes between Ma’aliya and Rizeigat tribes in East Darfur. Their fighting has mostly taken place near Abu Karinka town. The biggest clash resulted in the deaths of at least 44 people on 5 July.<\/p>\n

Ibrahim El Dai Ibrahim further said that five members of the association were arrested: Abdel Latif Eisa Faig, Braima Mohamad Ali Tor Jange, Mohamad Abdallah Bagan, El Shain Mohamad Yahya, and Sadia El Sheikh, who suffered from a serious head wound.<\/p>\n

A reconciliation conference between the two tribes is scheduled to resume on 10 August.<\/p>\n
