Militiamen shot dead a displaced man near Korma, North Darfur, on Thursday afternoon. Four others were wounded. The men ordered the camp residents to stop tending the surrounding farms. Militia elements also raped a displaced young woman in Kutum locality on Thursday, and injured three others severely.<\/p>\n

A witness and activist from Shoba camp in El Fasher locality told Radio Dabanga that ten militia members, riding on the backs of five camels, stormed the camp at 6 pm. They fired dense shots into the air, which killed Saleh Nurein Saleh, a displaced man from Tarafona. Four wounded, including a woman, were taken to the base of the AU-UN hybrid peacekeeping mission (Unamid) in Korma, about 60km west of El Fasher, for treatment.<\/p>\n

The attack resulted in the flight of large numbers of displaced people towards the Unamid base, the source said. He further reported that after this attack, the militiamen moved to the outskirts of the camp, where they attacked several nomads and their livestock. They stole 400 sheep, and then fled to the nomadic settlement in Abu Jelbah, according to the witness.<\/p>\n

Raped by militiamen<\/strong><\/p>\n

He added that members of the militia beat some of the displaced and raped several women. \u201cIn total, about 20 women have been raped by these men since the rainy season started (in June, ed.).\u201d<\/p>\n

In North Darfur’s Kutum locality, militia elements raped a displaced young woman and injured three others seriously near Kassab camp on Thursday. The government-backed militiamen riding on the backs of camels attacked 12 displaced people, including nine women, who were working on a farm nearby Kassab camp. They beat and whipped the displaced before raping the 18-year-old woman in front of her mother. The mother was beaten severely. Both her hands and legs were broken. The three seriously wounded were brought to the hospital in the camp for treatment.<\/p>\n

Farmers cannot tend lands<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pro-government militiamen in Shoba camp also prevented the displaced from tending their farms around the camp. \u201cThey claimed that these lands are meant for grazing, not for cultivation, and told the displaced to stay where they are in the camps,\u201d the activist said. \u201cNow, the people are afraid to go outside and stay inside their homes, not going out to tend the farmlands or cattle.\u201d<\/p>\n

On 20 July, Radio Dabanga reported that militiamen in North Darfur are grazing their livestock at farmlands. \u201cThey prohibit us to prepare for the new agricultural season,\u201d a farmer in Donki Ba\u2019ashim said.<\/p>\n
