The Sudanese Democratic Unionist Movement (DUM) has welcomed the Paris Declaration signed between the Sudan Revolutionary Front (RSF, an alliance of the main rebel movements) and the National Umma Party (NUP) on 8 August. The NUP Political Bureau has officially endorsed the Declaration.<\/p>\n

The head of DUM, Siddig El Hindi, told Radio Dabanga from Khartoum that the Paris Declaration addresses an agenda that is \u201ccrucial for a peaceful national dialogue, and the stoppage of the wars. The Declaration, supported by the EU, confirms the contents of former memorandums Unionists have signed with the SRF.\u201d<\/p>\n

El Hindi expressed surprise at the Sudanese government\u2019s unofficial rejection of the declaration\u2019s content, which, he said, corresponds with the regime\u2019s aspiration for democratic transformation. He disapproved \u201cthe talk about RSF\u2019s being dependent on forces abroad\u201d, and demanded from the government to support \u201cthis important step\u201d.<\/p>\n

On 8 August, Malik Agar, chairman of the SRF, and El Sadig El Mahdi, leader of the NUP signed an accord in Paris, in which they agreed on unifying the Sudanese opposition in order to end the conflicts in the country, and work on a democratic transformation.<\/p>\n

NUP vice-president, Maryam El Sadig El Mahdi, who participated in the preparations of the Paris conference and attended the signing of the Declaration, was detained by security officers at Khartoum airport upon her return on 11 August. She is currently being held in the Omdurman Women\u2019s Prison.<\/p>\n

Immediate action<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Political Bureau of the Umma Party has endorsed the Paris Declaration as \u201cthe basis for the building of a new nation, and an opportunity to achieve a just peace, democracy, and equal citizenship through a constitutional process \u2026, or as the basis for a popular peaceful uprising\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Political Bureau has instructed all party members and institutions to comply with the contents of the Paris Declaration, and \u201ctake immediate action to implement its comprehensive programmes in collaboration with the forces of change\u201d.<\/p>\n
