Representatives of the World Food Programme (WFP) have notified camp leaders in Central and South Darfur that the food rations for the displaced will be reduced.<\/p>\n

The coordinator of Central Darfur camps told Radio Dabanga that the leaders of Hamidiya camp in Zalingei locality were informed about a food ration reduction as of August. \u201cThe monthly rations of sorghum and lentils have been reduced from 9 kg to 6 kg per capita.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey told us that the decision to reduce the food rations was taken by WFP in Rome, because of the lack of donor support.\u201d<\/p>\n

The coordinator stressed that the reduction comes while prices of basic commodities are soaring. \u201cThe displaced in fact need an increase rather than reduction of relief.\u201d<\/p>\n

He demanded an \u201curgent survey of the living conditions at the displaced and refugee camps\u201d. \u201cWe have the right to be treated as all other displaced and refugees in other countries in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Gireida locality, South Darfur, WFP staff notified the leaders of the Gireida camps of the same decision on Sunday.<\/p>\n

A sheikh of Gireida\u2019s Um Zukhrat camp reported to Radio Dabanga that they were told that the food rations will be gradually reduced, from 25 percent to 50 percent during the months of November and December.<\/p>\n
