A delegation of Unicef in Sudan has visited Kalma camp for the displaced in Nyala locality, South Darfur, and pledged increased support in various fields.<\/p>\n

Saleh Eisa, secretary general of Kalma camp told Radio Dabanga that a representative of the UN Children\u2019s Fund (Unicef) in Sudan paid a visit to the camp on Monday. He was accompanied by a Unicef operations officer and an official of the Emergency Office in Sudan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey met with the staff of Kalma camp\u2019s Youth Organisation, who are working in the field of child protection and support of the newly displaced, as well as with personnel of the organisations providing nutrition and water in the camp. The Unicef delegation also held a meeting with the managers of the camp, including sheikhs, omdas, youth and women leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eisa explained that the meeting discussed the needs of the camp population. The displaced praised Unicef\u2019s support to the displaced, especially in the field of water, and the establishment of new schools. They requested Unicef to support the adult education programme at the camp by adding a compensatory curriculum for young men and women aged between 16 and 35, so as to enable them to complete the basic and secondary stages within seven years. <\/p>\n

They also asked about the possibility to obtain scholarships for university students to study abroad, \u201cbecause most Darfuri students do not have the opportunity to study at Sudanese universities\u201d.<\/p>\n

Apart from educational issues, the camp representatives said that the camp population is in need of more water pumps. They also proposed the replacement of old water engines with thermal generators. <\/p>\n

Though the Darfur Regional Authority agreed with the federal Ministry of Higher Education on the exemption of Darfur students to pay tuition and examination fees, several Sudanese universities insist on the payment of the fees, and have dismissed Darfuri students for this reason.<\/p>\n
