The police in Khartoum revealed the arrest of the prime suspect in the assassination of a Spanish diplomat on Monday. He has officially confessed. The Sudanese police have denied allegations that the murder was politically motivated.<\/p>\n

The head of police in Khartoum, Mohamed Ahmed Ali, said at a press conference on Friday that the information the police currently has, is that the suspect is a university student, and that he has been in touch with the diplomat for six months.<\/p>\n

Ahmed Ali said that the student was looking for a job and frequently met with the diplomat, asking him for a job opportunity. He said that the suspect left Khartoum for El Gezira state on the day after the murder, early in the morning.<\/p>\n

The chief of police added that the police found properties belonging to the deceased in the hands of the student, such as a phone and a iPad. \u201cThe suspect admitted to the crime immediately.\u201d He confirmed the existence of other people suspected of being involved in the incident.<\/p>\n

Ahmed Ali went on saying there were no political or terrorist motives behind the assassination, and that no organisation was behind it. \u201cIt is an individual act. The criminal investigation will reveal more details.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Spanish ambassador, Marcilia Barea, said that he is pleased with the arrest. \u201cThe accident was a shock to us. I thank the Sudanese police.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Sudanese foreign ministry in a separate statement identified the diplomat as Emiliano Garcia, 61 years old. He headed the visa section at the Embassy of Spain for the last three years. He was stabbed to death with a knife in his apartment in Garden City.<\/p>\n
