The number of blind people in Sudan has risen to 225,000. About 12,500 of them suffer from cataracts.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne child out of 1,000 children in the country is blind,\u201d the deputy director of the National Programme for Combating Blindness stated to the press in Khartoum on Wednesday. She attributed the rise to an increase of trachoma cases.<\/p>\n

The western and eastern regions of the country are the most affected with blindness, \u201cas a result of poverty and deteriorated health services\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n
