The commander of the Nierteti military garrison in Central Darfur swore at leaders of the displaced and cursed them during a meeting on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The meeting was held at the office of Nierteti locality to discuss the security situation in the area. It was attended by the head of the security service in the locality, representatives of Unamid, the omda of Nierteti, and 32 leaders of the Nierteti North and South camps.<\/p>\n

“The displaced complained about the worsening of the security situation in the locality. They pointed to militiamen and soldiers killing, raping and robbing the people continuously, and hindering displaced farmers from harvesting their crops,” one of the camp leaders told Radio Dabanga.<\/p>\n

“When the camp leaders demanded from the garrison's commander, a colonel, to put an end to the assaults, he became furious. He began to shout and swear at the camp leaders, cursing the displaced, after which he walked out of the meeting.”<\/p>\n

The source said that the head of the security service apologised to the camp leaders. “He asked them to be patient, because they had accused the commander of serious faults. The meeting, however, called for pressing charges against the colonel for gruesome behaviour and offending religion.”<\/p>\n

The camp leader noted that the issue of the deteriorating security situation will be discussed again with the Nierteti locality commissioner, “immediately after his return”.<\/p>\n
