The European Union will donate \u20ac11 million in aid to support development projects in South Darfur, following a visit of EU ambassadors to Nyala\u2019s Kalma camp on Thursday. They met with camp leaders, youths, women, and the  Darfur Displaced and Refugees Association.<\/p>\n

The meetings discussed the health and security situations in the camp, located east of Nyala city. The spokesman for the association, Hussein Abu Sharati, told Radio Dabanga that the leaders of the displaced population explained to the ambassadors how they suffer from the pro-government militias\u2019 continuous attacks, rapes, and stealing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe camp leaders also stressed the lack of medicines, water, and the educational problems: there are not enough teachers, books, and class rooms,\u201d Sharati said. The spokesman concluded that the members of the delegation, headed by EU ambassador to Sudan Tomas Ulicny, committed themselves to answer all the needs of the displaced people.<\/p>\n

South Darfur’s insecurity<\/strong><\/p>\n

The European Union has announced the donation of \u20ac11 million in aid, to support development projects and humanitarian services in South Darfur. Ulicny told reporters that he demanded more security and stability in the state during a meeting with the state\u2019s acting Governor, Abdel Rahman Hussein Gardud, in Nyala on Wednesday. It would open the way for the implementation of development projects related to health services, sanitation, food supplies, democracy, human rights, and education, the ambassador claimed.<\/p>\n

Hussein Gardud said the security situation in the state is stable enough to implement development projects, adding that many displaced persons returned to their villages.<\/p>\n

Ulicny stressed that the EU member states are morally committed to support Darfur\u2019s humanitarian and development issues. He noted that the main objective of the delegation\u2019s visit was to assess the political and developmental needs, in addition to the humanitarian situation.<\/p>\n

Delegation visits school<\/strong><\/p>\n

Khartoum-based European diplomats from France, Sweden, United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain are visiting South Darfur state where they meet the Governor and Darfur Regional Authority for talks on political, development and humanitarian areas.<\/p>\n

They also interacted with children at the Hay El Nahda Basic School for Boys in Nyala, according to a statement from Unicef-Sudan on its Facebook page.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith funds from the EU, Unicef, state authorities, and NGOs will train 2,000 teachers, 450 headmasters and benefit 100,000 students across East and South Darfur including students at this school,\u201d said Unicef.<\/p>\n
