A group of militiamen attacked the area of Saraf Jidad in West Darfur’s Sirba locality on Saturday, leaving a swath of destroyed farms in their wake.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They also stole hundreds of head of livestock, the coordinator of the Sirba camps told Radio Dabanga.<\/p>\n

He explained that the attack was a reprisal action. “On Friday morning, these janjaweed ambushed a number of women who were tending their farms in the neighbourhood of Saraf Jidad. The police intervened and in the ensuing gunfight, one of the attackers was injured and his horse was killed. The police detained the wounded man, and transported him to El Geneina.<\/p>\n

“In response on Friday, the janjaweed destroyed a large number of farms in the area, and stole more than 300 sheep and goats, and 36 cows.”<\/p>\n

The camp coordinator said that the militiamen returned on Saturday, and abducted four residents of Saraf Jidad. “They demanded a compensation of SDG60,000 ($9,400) for the injured man and the dead horse, and threatened to set the village on fire if the people do not pay.<\/p>\n

“Native Administration leaders in El Geneina intervened and paid SDG30,000. They promised to pay the rest within a week,” he said.<\/p>\n
