The authorities of El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, have announced more stringent measures to curb the insecure situation in the area.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Thursday, the government of North Darfur issued a decision banning unregistered vehicles and vehicles with tinted glass from El Fasher.<\/p>\n

The North Darfur customs authorities will not only stop vehicles coming from Libya and that have not been registered, but will also seize them and put them in “closed cages”, a North Darfur official told reporters in the state capital on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The authorities re-imposed<\/a> a number of measures early this year<\/a> in attempts to curb the rampant insecurity in North Darfur. These included a ban on unregistered vehicles (imported or militia-owned), the carrying of weapons by civilians, the use of a motorcycle by more than one person, and the wearing of a kadamool <\/em>(a turban covering the face).<\/p>\n

A car dealer reported to Radio Dabanga in January<\/a> this year that about 4,000 cars from Libya were waiting for license plates.<\/p>\n

He said that Libyans smuggle the vehicles into North Darfur. “They sell them at low prices, and the new owners take them to El Fasher to be registered. In this way, dozens of vehicles arrive at the Customs Office in El Fasher each day.”<\/p>\n
