♦ Power and water cuts, soaring prices in Sudan states<\/strong><\/p>\n

July 1 – 2018 ABU JUBEIHA \/ EL MAHAS \/ PORT SUDAN<\/em> Soaring prices in various parts of Sudan and cuts in power and water supply have continued to upset residents in cities and towns. People in Abu Jubeiha in South Kordofan are complaining about a significant increase in the price of bread last week. On Wednesday, the prices of bread rose again in Abu Jubeiha in South Kordofan. A bakery owner told Radio Dabanga that he and his colleagues were forced to increase the bread prices because of the soaring flour prices in the country.<\/p>\n

In the Northern State, a number of villages in the northern district of El Mahas will have to make do without electricity the coming days. Sinmar Company which is responsible for the power supply to the villages announced last week that the electricity will be shut-off until the residents have paid additional fees. The costs for the provision of electricity have risen because of the newly indicative US Dollar rate set by the Central Bank of Sudan.<\/p>\n

The economy in Sudan has hit rock bottom. In early January, inflation spiralled upwards after Khartoum implemented far-fetching austerity measures in compliance with the 2018 national budget. Apart for skyrocketing prices, the majority of the Sudanese are suffering from continuing fuel shortages, and a scarcity of wheat and medicines, and power and drinking water outages.<\/p>\n

Such as Port Sudan, where various districts have not witnessed a continuous supply of water for months. In Teransit district on Friday, the protesters were asked by the state governor to present their complaints in writing. Riot police dispersed similar protests<\/a> in June with force.<\/p>\n
