♦ Sudanese priest charged with apostasy, Christians forced to renounce faith<\/strong><\/p>\n

October 31 – 2018 NYALA A Sudanese priest has been charged with apostasy – and offence that carries the death penalty in the Islamic country. Eight other Christians have been forced to renounce their faith and return to Islam after alleged torture in custody.<\/p>\n

As previously reported by Radio Dabanga, agents of Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) held 13 Christians from a home they share in Nyala on October 13. The reason for the detention of the Christians in the South Darfur capital is unclear, World Watch Monitor (WWM) reported. A local source told the Christian watchdog that three of the detainees were later released, without an explanation.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS) calls upon the Sudanese government to urgently investigate the reported torture and ill-treatment of 9 Christian citizens who were detained by the National Intelligence and Security Services on allegations of apostasy.<\/p>\n

♦ Newspapers sign restrictive media charter, journalists investigated<\/strong><\/p>\n

November 6 – 2018 KHARTOUM On November 1, a number of editors-in-chief signed a restrictive media charter at the National Assembly in the presence of the prime minister, the attorney-general and the director of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS). The Charter of Honour stipulates that no material or news about the Sudanese regular forces is to be published in newspapers without indication of a spokesman. In return the government promised to not confiscate newspapers or ban journalists from writing.<\/p>\n

The charter does not solve the problems of the press in Sudan, according to critics of the new charter including journalists networks and newspaper editors whom did not sign the charter. Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n

Last week, the State Security Prosecution conducted investigations regarding three journalists and correspondents who met with EU and US officials in October, based on a complaint filed by the NISS. According to one of the journalists the meeting dealt with the issues of press freedoms in Sudan in a natural context.
