♦ Protest crackdown: Sudan suspends correspondents' work permits<\/strong><\/p>\n

January 22 – 2019 KHARTOUM Sudanese newspapers and foreign correspondents’ work permits have been confiscated again by the Sudanese security service for their coverage of the ongoing protests against President Omar Al Bashir and the economic crises in Sudan, since December 19.<\/p>\n

El Jareeda<\/em> newspaper was confiscated for the ninth time in a row on Monday, as well as El Midan<\/em> newspaper, El Tayyar<\/em> and El Baath<\/em>. The NISS restrictions are severe, journalists have said: any material related to the demonstrations and the security forces’ violence against the demonstrators is banned.<\/p>\n

For this reason Sudanese authorities also withdrew work permits and press cards on Monday from journalists of Sudanese and foreign media agencies. The permit of El Arabiya TV<\/em> correspondent Saadeldin Hasan was withdrawn, as well as the permits of the Turkish Anadolu<\/em> correspondents Bahram Abdelmonim and Mahmoud Hajaj, and correspondents of Al Jazeera English and Arabic, including <\/em>Hiba Morgan.<\/p>\n

When covering protests mid-January, NISS members beat a number of journalists who were covering a peaceful march in Khartoum Bahri, detained and interrogated them.<\/p>\n

♦ Sudan uprising: Masses protest in Omdurman, El Gezira demo carries on<\/strong><\/p>\n

January 22 – 2019 WAD MEDANI \/ KHARTOUM On Sunday, many Sudanese people demonstrated in Omdurman, as demonstrations demanding president Omar Al Bashir and his regime to step down entered the fifth week. Security forces were deployed with unprecedented size along streets leading to Parliament yesterday. Security forces used live ammunition, rubber bullets, tear gas, electric wires, and batons, causing injury to demonstrators<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Both on Sunday and Monday the capital of El Gezira state, Wad Medani, became the stage of peaceful protests. Eyewitnesses told Radio Dabanga that joint security forces confronted the demonstrations with tear gas, guns and plastic wires to disperse them. In previous days, demonstrations were also carried out by hospital workers in Sennar, Kassala, and El Fasher.<\/p>\n

A young Sudanese man who was reportedly shot by security forces in Khartoum died from his injuries on Monday, the Sudan Central Doctors’ Committee said. He is the third victim who died from the protest in Burri<\/a> neighbourhood last Thursday, after a doctor and a man were also killed by security forces.<\/p>\n

Today (Tuesday), workers gathered under the banner of the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) and civil society groups again called upon Sudanese people to go out in demonstrations that day.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile President Omar Al Bashir’s accusation of anti-government demonstrators killing each other during demonstrations, using weapons that are not in use of Sudanese armed forces, has met fierce backlash<\/a>.<\/p>\n
