♦ Sudanese journalists arrested, imprisoned under emergency law<\/strong><\/p>\n

February 5 – 2019 KHARTOUM \/ NYALA<\/em> A South Darfur journalist was sentenced to three months in prison under the emergency law, for as of yet unknown reasons, on Monday. The previous day, journalist Hussein Saad was arrested by the Sudanese security service (NISS) and brough to an unknown destination.<\/p>\n

Colleagues of Saad told Radio Dabanga that the journalist, who is active in reporting on the issues of Sudan’s El Gezira and El Managil Agricultural Scheme farmers, was intercepted by NISS officers, for reasons unknown.<\/p>\n

Sudanese media organisations and journalists have been targeted for reporting the events surrounding the demonstrations that have been going on for one and a half month, which call for the step-down of President Al Bashir and his regime that has been in power for 30 years. Sudanese authorities have withdrawn work permits and press cards from journalists of Sudanese and foreign media agencies.<\/p>\n

♦ Torture and death of teacher sparks further Sudan protests<\/strong><\/p>\n

February 5 – 2019 KHARTOUM \/ KASSALA<\/em> The National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) has tortured to death two men in El Abbasiya, South Kordofan, and Ahmed El Kheir in Khashm El Girba, Kassala, while being held in detention centres, according to the Sudanese Doctors’ Central Committee.<\/p>\n

In addition, the family of Ahmed El Kheir, a teacher from Khashm El Girba in Kassala, said that he was tortured to death inside NISS buildings after they took him from his house against the backdrop of demonstrations on January 31. The police director in Kassala State has stated that the teacher felt sick during the interrogation. A doctor confirmed his death at the detention centre. His family identified his body at the morgue. Brother Saad El Kheir told Sudanese media that the body showed signs of torture and beatings.<\/p>\n

In response the Teachers Committee announced a full strike in all schools as of Sunday to condemn the killing of El Kheir. Several teacher protests continued in Kassala<\/a> on Monday. In addition, political opposition groups renewed their demands to establish an international commission of inquiry<\/a> to investigate the facts<\/p>\n
