A compact weekly digest of Dabanga Sudan's news highlights from Darfur and Sudan<\/em><\/p>\n

The Khartoum sit-in was broken up<\/strong> this Monday, following last week's two-day mass strike across Sudan. JEM leader Ibrahim El Maz Deng was seized at his home<\/strong> in Khartoum, and elsewhere, RSF militia clashed with Central Darfur rebels<\/strong>. Here's a roundup of Sudan this week:<\/p>\n

♦ 35 dead as Sudan junta ends Khartoum sit-in by force<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

June 3 – 2019 KHARTOUM At least 35 protestors were killed, according to the Sudanese Doctor's Central Committee, following actions yesterday by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia and police forcibly to end the sit-in that has been sustained since April 6 at the army’s general command in Khartoum. Tents of the protesters were set on fire and roads were blocked to prevent demonstrators from returning to the site.<\/p>\n

The Sudanese Doctors Central Committee, that has been at the heart of the protests, initially confirmed nine dead, but it is feared more people have been killed and the latest estimate yesterday evening was 13. The figure is now 35. The committee said the number is likely to rise as many casualties are still unaccounted for.<\/p>\n

The violent dispersal of the Khartoum sit-in today has confirmed fears voiced by the Sudan Professionals Association (SPA) on Sunday, which said it had reason to believe that the military junta was systematically planning to end the peaceful sit-in. In a statement, the SPA said the Transitional Military Council would be held accountable and called for a campaign of civil disobedience: "It is imperative to go out to the streets to protect the revolution and the remaining dignity. Our weapons are peace and courage."<\/p>\n

The National Consensus Forces (a coalition of progressive opposition parties) described the junta’s recent statement describing the sit-in as a danger to Sudan as merely an attempt to describe the peaceful sit-ins as a crime scene.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

♦ Central Darfur rebels ‘repel RSF offensive’ in Jebel Marra<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

June 3 – 2019 JEBEL MARRA <\/em>The Sudan Liberation Movement under the leadership of Abdelwahid El Nur (SLM-AW) claims that RSF militia launched an offensive on its positions in Jebel Marra in Central Darfur on Saturday. The movement says it repelled the attack. In a statement on Sunday, the SLM-AW military spokesman Waleed Abakar,, said that the movement’s forces “confronted the aggressor” in the area of Rari and Barbara in Jebel Marra, and managed to repel the attack after the RSF lost lives and equipment. Abakar also reported that RSF militiamen shot Eisa Adam Suleiman dead, and wounded Adam Yahya (nicknamed Fati), and Mohamed Haroun Mousa on the Feina Kidigir road in Jebel Marra on Thursday. He said that the assailants seized all their belongings. Two months ago, the SLM announced it also repelled an attack by the RSF.<\/p>\n
