Sudan’s ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the opposition Alliance for Freedom and Change (AFC) have agreed to resume talks on a transitional Sovereign Council. The AFC has said it will suspend its campaign of civil disobedience and general strike<\/a>, that has brought the country to a standstill this week.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sudan’s Transitional Military Council also agreed to release political prisoners as a confidence-building measure, Ethiopian mediator special envoy Mohamoud Dirir said in Khartoum on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

In a press conference held on Tuesday, the special envoy of the Ethiopian Prime Minister said he held separate discussions with the TMC head Ahmed El Burhan and the AFC leaders to facilitate the resumption of talks on the remaining sticking points.<\/p>\n

It is believed by some opposition members that the TMC in its meetings with Dirir agreed to give the presidency of the collegial presidential body to the civilians together with the majority of seats, after refusing during the past weeks.<\/p>\n

In addition, he said the two sides agreed to “refrain from inflammatory statements” and create a conducive environment before the resumption of talks.<\/p>\n

The TMC “agreed to take confidence-building measures including the release of Political Prisoners” and the AFC “agreed to call-off the Civil-Disobedience,” he added.<\/p>\n

Civil disobedience campaign<\/strong><\/p>\n

The second day of the civil disobedience campaign<\/a> witnessed a large-scale response by the Sudanese in the cities of Sudan and its various states in Darfur, Kordofan, El Gezira, Sennar, Blue Nile, Kassala, El Gedaref, the Red Sea, the River Nile and the Northern state.<\/p>\n

In a field report on the last three days, the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), the driving force behind the #SudanUprising, present an evaluation of the civil disobedience and general strike in the professional, vocational, service and local sectors carried out by the Sudanese masses from Sunday to Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Evaluations were carried out in various sectors, which show that in many sectors, including education, transportation, aviation, logistics, banking, engineering, business and commerce, the response to the civil disobedience campaign was 80-90%.<\/p>\n
