The ruling Transitional Military Council and the opposition Alliance for Freedom and Change (AFC) have reached an agreement on power sharing during a transitional period of three years and three months. The presidency will rotate and a technocratic government will be formed by the AFC.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The agreement was announced in the early hours of Friday morning July 5.<\/p>\n

A Sovereign Council will be established and will consist of 11 members. One of the Sovereign Council members will act as president. Five members will be from the military, five will be civilians. The 11th<\/sup> member will be civilian, but will be selected by both the TMC and the AFC.<\/p>\n

The presidency will rotate. The coming 21 months the president will be from the military, followed by a civilian for 18 months. Elections will be held after the transitional period.<\/p>\n

Legislative body<\/strong><\/p>\n

A legislative body will be set up by the two sides, but its formation is not clear yet. In earlier proposals from the African Union and Ethiopian mediators it was said that the AFC would get two thirds of the seats.<\/p>\n

Investigation<\/strong><\/p>\n

An agreement has also been reached on an investigation into the violent breakup of the Khartoum sit-in on June 3<\/a> and all the protestors killed since then. There will be a “national, meticulous, transparent and independent investigation” and the findings will be made public.<\/p>\n

Watertight text<\/strong><\/p>\n

A legal committee will work out the agreement into “a watertight text”, which is to be signed within two days. The transitional period starts when this text is signed, African Union mediator Mohamed Lebatt said.<\/p>\n

Thousands of people took to the streets in Khartoum and Omdurman last night when the news came out, chanting slogans and celebrating.<\/p>\n
