Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, chairman of the Sovereign Council, launched a campaign of disarmament in Darfur. No one but the Sudan Armed Forces<\/strong> is allowed to possess guns anymore.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speaking at the Military Headquarters of the 16th Infantry Division in South Darfur’s capital Nyala on Friday, El Burhan vowed to arrest and hold accountable all those who threaten the security of the people in the camps for displaced persons, in the villages or on their pastures. "This is a new beginning. We want to establish a country where no one is above the law."<\/p>\n

Smuggling<\/strong><\/p>\n

El Burhan ordered the combat against cross-border smuggling of weapons, goods, and vehicles, against armed robberies and all other illegal activities that were once prevalent in Darfur, such as armed conflict and banditry. He instructed everyone to implement these directives, "to preserve the security of the people and to preserve the spirit of the revolution".<\/p>\n

Armed movements<\/strong><\/p>\n

He called upon rebel armed movements to participate in peacebuilding and the development of the country. El Burhan pledged to build a secure and democratic state, where all people have equal rights. "We are determined to make the transitional period a success and put an end to injustice and marginalisation."<\/p>\n
