♦  El Burhan: ‘Sudan govt will not hand Al Bashir to ICC’<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

November 24 – 2019 KHARTOUM The head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, says that the current government does not intend to transfer<\/a> ousted President Omar Al Bashir to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.<\/p>\n

During an interview with Al Jazeera Mubasher<\/em> on November 21, El Burhan stressed that “the Sudanese judiciary is independent and enjoys the confidence of everyone to ensure the prosecution of anyone”.<\/p>\n

In response, the Sudanese Professionals Association, called on the government to respect<\/a> the struggle of the Sudanese for justice, and hand Al Bashir to the ICC. The Forces for Freedom and Change also said they adhere to their position<\/a>. The Darfur Bar Association reacted by saying that the indictment of Al Bashir by the ICC does not mean he cannot be tried in Sudanese courts for other crimes.<\/p>\n

Al Bashir, indicted by the ICC<\/a> in 2009 for war crimes and crimes against humanity, and in 2010 for genocide, is currently being held in Kober Prison in Khartoum North, on various charges, including corruption and murder.<\/div>\n

♦  Sudan to investigate cases of illegally granted citizenship<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

November 22 – 2019 KHARTOUM The Sudanese Ministry of Interior Affairs is investigating the practice of illegally granting nationalities to foreigners living in the country.<\/p>\n

In a press statement in Khartoum on Thursday, Interior Minister Lt Gen El Tereifi Idris said he will prosecute those involved in illegally granting citizenship to foreigners, and bring them to justice.<\/p>\n

The people who obtained Sudanese citizenship during the 30-year reign of Omar Al Bashir, deposed on April 11, can be divided in three categories.<\/p>\n

The first two categories are formed by businessmen who obtained the Sudanese nationality by official ways, and foreigners living in the country who became Sudanese after fulfilling all legal conditions. The third category of people obtained the nationality illegally. It was granted to them by influential figures of the Al Bashir regime who just bypassed the law, the minister explained.

\nReportedly<\/a>, about 4,000 Syrian refugees were granted Sudanese citizenship in 2016. West Africans allegedly received the Sudanese nationality when they were invited by the Al Bashir regime to settle in Darfur<\/a>.<\/p>\n
